Mango is a highly nutritious seasonal fruit. Diabetics can eat mangoes. Since mango contains a good amount of sugar and calories, those who are overweight and diabetic may eat one medium-sized mango a day. However, instead of eating extra carbs, they must replace it with mango. For example, if they eat mango, they should skip rice/roti, or walk for 1 to 1.5 hours instead of 40 minutes.
Mango contains no bad fat, and no harmful salt. A 100-gram mango provides around 79–82 calories, and about 75–85% of a mango is water. Fresh mango is healthier than juice. Mango is also rich in fiber. The glycemic index (GI) of mango is moderate, depending on the variety. Mangoes that are higher in fiber have a lower GI.
Raw mango is also very beneficial. It contains less sugar, boosts energy, increases bile acid secretion, and helps in the production of new blood cells.
📌 Caution: Patients with kidney disease or both kidney and diabetes should only eat mango under a doctor’s or nutritionist’s advice, because mango is high in potassium, which may harm the kidneys.
Jackfruit also causes confusion for diabetic patients. The rise in blood sugar after eating depends on the food’s glycemic index. Experts say jackfruit has a GI of about 50–60%, which is moderate.
Jackfruit is rich in fiber, which helps control blood sugar. But diabetics cannot eat it as much as they like, because it is a sweet fruit. They can eat 3–4 bulbs (about 50 grams) per day, but must avoid eating other sweet fruits on that day.
📌 Caution: Jackfruit is not suitable for kidney patients because it is also high in potassium.
